Writing Classes in Berkeley
Classes beginning in Spring 2010 I'm excited about both of these offerings and look forward to teaching, facilitating, nurturing, nudging, and seeing stories and writers grow. Class size is limited—8 people per class!--so that each person receives individual attention.
“Writing the Middle Grade or Young Adult Novel"
10 2-hour weekly sessions on Thursdays, from 4 - 6 pm
March 11th through May 20th (no class on April 1st)
Location: Deborah’s home in North Berkeley, near Solano Avenue

Each week we’ll focus on a different aspect of novel writing (character, point of view, dialogue, setting, back story, etc). Through in-class writing exercises and discussion, you’ll be supported and inspired to work on your own novel. We’ll share work and give feedback, and we’ll read several middle grade and young adult novels that will form the basis for our topic discussions. This class is for people who have never written a novel as well as those who have started one and wish to gain a deeper understanding of how novels work and how to create memorable ones. "Get-It-Written Group"
12 2-hour monthly sessions on Thursdays , from 10 am - 12 pm
March 11th, 2010 through February 17, 2011
(2010 dates: 3/11, 4/8, 5/13, 6/10, 7/8, 8/5, 9/9 10/14, 11/11, 12/9; 2011 dates: 1/13, 2/17)

Limited to 8 participants Fee: $540 (If you have taken “Writing the MG or YA Novel” you may take 10% off—comes to $486) Need a little something extra to motivate and sustain you to finish your book? In this intimate group, we will set writing goals, share new pages, discuss writing and revision challenges as they arise, learn organizational and revision techniques, develop a writing buddy relationship, and in other ways support each other to complete at least one writing project. This group is for writers who are just starting out and have a fairly developed concept as well as for those who are farther along or in the thick of revising. Participants should have some familiarity with classic story structure and topics such as character, voice, setting, point of view, dialogue, back story, and theme.
