and Academic Writing Camps

I'm pleased to offer my 8th summer of creative writing camps for children and teens. Our small group size insures individualized attention and a close-knit, supportive atmosphere. Perfect for motivated or hesitant writers, our camps are both encouraging and fun.

  • Location: 766 Vincente Ave in N. Berkeley, near Solano Ave.
  • $75 discount if you register for two workshops.

5-Day Creative Writing Camps

For 7th to 12th Grades

Cost: $450

In the Creative Writing Camps, participants are encouraged to write what interests them (stories, poems, etc), get to know other writers, share their writing in a supportive atmosphere, and compile a booklet of the group's pieces. We'll use fun, inspiring, easy writing prompts to generate ideas and create voices, plots, characters, and settings. Participants develop writing skills and confidence. Many participants report feeling greater ease and confidence the following year with school writing assignments.

Academic Writing Made Easier

A 5-day, half-day camp for 7th to 12th Grades

Cost: $650

Does your child struggle with school papers and reports? For many kids, academic writing is tedious, daunting, or both—but it doesn’t have to be! This camp will give students in grades 7 through 12 the skills and confidence to tackle all sorts of academic writing projects—from on-the-spot short quiz questions to longer papers and research reports. Small group size (8 students maximum) ensures that each student receives individualized attention to address their particular writing challenges and needs.

We'll cover how to:

  • overcome procrastination
  • come up with interesting, compelling essay ideas
  • break the writing process down into small, manageable steps
  • plan, organize, write, and revise an essay or report
  • make writing more enjoyable!

Academic Writing Made Easier includes:

  • a 30-minute phone, Skype, or in-person consultation with one or both parents to discuss you child’s writing challenges and goals
  • customized writing exercises to build new and more effective writing habits and skills
  • written feedback on your child’s writing assignments
  • a follow-up report to parents about their child’s progress during the camp along with recommendations for how to support your child during the school year.

College Essay Writing Workshops

For rising 11th and 12th Grades

Cost: $300

This essay workshop teaches your teen to how to write outstanding college application essays. Participants learn the elements of a strong essay, generate topic ideas, and draft essays for the four UC Insight Questions and the Common Application. Limited to 8 students so each student receives individualized attention and essay feedback. Workshop participants are guaranteed space in Deborah's one-on-one essay coaching practice. Workshop bonus: Each student receives follow-up feedback on one personal statement (for the Common or Coalition Application) and on the four UC insight questions.

The workshops include:

  • Individualized Instruction: Throughout the workshop Deborah is available during writing time to answer questions, help students overcome writer’s block, offer on-the-spot feedback, and otherwise offer prompt individual attention.
  • Prompt feedback: Students receive on-the-spot feedback as they develop ideas and write their first drafts.
  • Workshop Follow-up: Workshop participants are guaranteed space in Deborah's individual essay coaching throughout the application season.
  • Workshop Bonus: Students receive follow-up feedback on one personal statement and four UC insight questions written in the workshop.

Workshop Cancellation Policy

100% minus $45 registration fee up to five weeks prior to start of workshop. 75% minus registration fee up to four weeks prior. 50% minus registration fee up to three weeks prior. 25% minus registration fee up to two weeks prior. No refunds given within 14 days of start of workshop.

About the instructor:

Deborah Davis, MFA is the author of three award-winning novels for young people and instructs the popular Summer Teen Writing Workshops in Berkeley, CA. She has taught writing in person and more recently online to children, teens, and adults for 26 years. In addition to teaching, Deborah offers private writing consultations, manuscript editing, and college essay coaching.
